KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer announced Wednesday that sophomore running back Onterrio Smith has been dismissed from the team for violation of team rules.

Fulmer did not elaborate on the violation.

In January, Smith was arrested in his hometown of Sacramento, Calif., and charged with misdemeanor battery after allegedly striking the mother of his 2-year-old child.

Smith, who had 189 yards on 31 carries and four touchdowns last season, was listed as the No. 3 tailback coming out of spring practice. Earlier this year, he was expected to be in the mix with Travis Henry and Travis Stephens for the starting tailback job this season.

During the 1999 season, Smith blossomed in his role as tailback with a 61-yard scoring run against Kentucky and a 51-yard touchdown run against Vanderbilt.
