AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Auburn football players Deandre Green and Brandon Reed were arrested Thursday for allegedly firing a handgun on campus during a fraternity step sign musical event.

Green, 19, allegedly fired a shot to get the attention of several people engaged in an altercation on the University Concourse at about 9 p.m. Wednesday, said Maj. Melvin Owens of the university's Department of Public Safety.

The event was attended by about 300 people. No injuries were reported.

Green and Reed, 20, are not members of the social fraternity, nor were they involved in the altercation, Owens said. He said the gun was not fired in the direction of anyone.

Green was charged with reckless endangerment, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by a maximum $1,000 fine and a year in jail.

Reed was charged with possession of an unregistered firearm. The Class B misdemeanor carries a maximum $500 fine and six months in jail. Green and Reed were being held in the Auburn City Jail pending bond. Green, a freshman receiver from Prichard, was one of the Tigers' most heralded recruits two years ago. He re-signed with Auburn after spending a year at prep school to qualify academically and had nine catches for 96 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers' spring A-Day Game. Reed, a sophomore reserve cornerback from Mobile, played in all 11 games on special teams last season. Earlier this month, the wife of Lorenzo Diamond was charged with failing to have a license to carry a gun after accidentally shooting the tight end.
