AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville has kicked two players off the team, including one who was the defensive star of the Tigers' A-Day game.

Tuberville on Tuesday dismissed sophomore defensive end Derek Magwood, whose spring performance put him in line to be a starter, and sophomore defensive back Brandon Reed.

Magwood, from Savannah, Ga., was dismissed for violating unspecified team rules. He was the defensive most valuable player in the spring A-Day game. He had 18 tackles last season.

Reed, 20, of Mobile, was arrested last week for illegal possession of a firearm. He was dismissed Tuesday after he was arrested a second time, for illegal use of a debit card stolen from a teammate, according to a report in the Opelika-Auburn News. A statement from Auburn did not specify the rules violation that prompted the dismissal.

Reed allegedly stole 21-year-old quarterback Daniel Cobb's debit card and used it to make about $950 in purchases at Dillard's and Sears in Colonial Mall on April 20, according to an Auburn police official.

Reed turned himself in Friday just a day after being released from jail for a shooting incident in which 19-year-old freshman receiver Deandre Green allegedly fired a shot to get the attention of several people involved in a fight.

Reed was charged with possession of an unregistered firearm in that incident.

Reed played in 11 games in 1999 on special teams and as a reserve defensive back, making eight tackles.

Tuberville said Monday that Green, a freshman wide receiver, will remain off the team until authorities resolve the misdemeanor charges.
