ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Navy quarterback Brian Broadwater will be out for four to six weeks after fracturing his larynx in Saturday's game against Georgia Tech.

The injury occurred when Broadwater completed a shovel pass to running back Gene Reese on the second-to-last play of Navy's 40-13 loss to the Yellow Jackets.

Broadwater spent the night at Crawford-Long Hospital in Atlanta and was to return to Annapolis on Sunday, Navy spokesman Scott Strasemeier said.

Broadwater was hit in the throat, and the severity of the injury appeared to worsen after the quarterback entered the locker room after the game. After a while, Broadwater couldn't talk, Strasemeier said.

Broadwater is the second quarterback the Navy has lost this season. During the annual Blue-Gold game that concluded spring practice in April, starter Brian Madden twisted his right knee, tearing the anterior cruciate ligament, and was lost for the season. Broadwater, a senior, was his backup.

Ed Malinowski will start for Navy on Saturday in Boston when the Midshipmen play Boston College. It will be the junior's first career start at quarterback. He played in five games last year in a reserve role.

Against Hawaii, Malinowski carried the ball seven times for 34 yards in the third quarter before separating his shoulder.

Malinowski was switched to defensive back in the spring, but was returned to quarterback when Madden was hurt. Freshman Craig Candeto is now second on the depth chart.
