Gators' Zedalis granted sixth year

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- The NCAA has granted Florida offensive lineman Zac Zedalis a sixth year of eligibility, allowing him to play in 2001 after missing the last two seasons with injuries.

"It's nice to have him back for another year, there's no question about that," offensive line coach Jimmy Ray Stephens said Wednesday. "But right now, the question is, can he play? Is he healthy enough to play?"

Zedalis was a preseason all-SEC selection, but complications from a summer knee surgery sidelined him all season.

Last season, he went out with a torn knee ligament. Doctors found Zedalis had a rare illness in which bone matter forms where ligament was supposed to be.

If healthy, Zedalis should compete with junior David Jorgensen for the starting center position. Before the injury, Zedalis started 13 games for the Gators.

Zedalis redshirted his freshman year, so he needed a special waiver to gain a rare sixth season of eligibility.
