Berlin outplays Grossman at Gators' spring game

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Brock Berlin took a big step Saturday in his battle to be Florida's starting quarterback this fall, playing well in the Orange and Blue spring game.

Berlin looked comfortable leading the Orange to a 23-12 victory on a bright, summerlike afternoon in front of an estimate 26,500 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. He completed 15 of 34 passes for 261 yards, including two touchdowns and one interception.

Rex Grossman, his competition, completed 13 of 24 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown, but was sloppy with the football, fumbling four times, losing one.

Although Berlin outplayed Grossman, coach Steve Spurrier said neither is ahead of the other as spring practices comes to an end.

"Quarterbacks can really improve between now and September. Hopefully, we'll have one guy and let him go until he can't go anymore," Spurrier said. "They need to get sharper and more knowledgeable. They need to work on their decision making, but that's hard to do in summer."

Both quarterbacks had their share of highlights in the game played with 12-minute quarters throughout and a running clock in the second half.

Berlin found tight end Aaron Walker for two touchdowns in the first half and also hit Jabar Gaffney and Matt Jackson in stride for gains of 42 yards and 47 yards respectively.

Grossman led the Blue to field goals on its first two possessions, hitting a 29-yard pass to tight end Ben Troupe. He connected with Reche Caldwell for a 43-yard touchdown in the second half.

One the downside, Berlin threw an interception directly to safety Todd Johnson, while Grossman had trouble holding on to snaps and making handoffs.

The ups and downs are all a part of spring, Grossman said.

"It pretty much went as expected," Grossman said. "Obviously, I'm never satisfied with how well I played. I think I could have played a little better."

Although he may have gotten the best of things in this round, Berlin said being the starting quarterback is something he'll have to earn in the fall, not the spring.

"I'm going to be here all summer, just to kind of get ready," Berlin said. "I'm going to try to get up in the film room and be on the field and learn as much as I can."
