Garnet and good QB Rix surges ahead of Boldin at FSU spring game
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Freshman quarterback Chris Rix threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns Saturday to lead his team to a 20-7 win in Florida State's spring football game. Rix's performance cemented his position as the Seminoles' top quarterback heading into the summer. But coach Bobby Bowden said Rix and Anquan Boldin will continue to compete for the job during fall practices. Bowden said he was pleased that Rix and Boldin avoided mistakes during the annual Garnet and Gold game and "didn't play stupid." "Neither of them dug a hole today, and I thought that was encouraging," Bowden said. The battle between Rix and Boldin to replace Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke has been the biggest story of the Seminoles' spring practices. Neither has experience as a college quarterback. Rix redshirted last year, while Boldin, a former high school quarterback, played wide receiver during his first two years at Florida State. Rix threw touchdown passes of 26 yards to Travis Smith and nine yards to Talman Gardner Saturday. He said he was pleased that he got the touchdowns against Florida State's defense, which dominated much of the scrimmage. "I think it's a big confidence boost going into the summer that we could get some scores against this defense," Rix said. Boldin completed eight of 17 passes for 101 yards. He said he made progress this spring after switching from wide receiver. "Right now, I think the position is still open," Boldin said. "So I'm going to do everything I can this summer to win that position." An estimated 12,250 fans turned out for the spring game, which included a halftime ceremony honoring Weinke. The Heisman Trophy winner started for three years at Florida State and led the school to the 1999 national championship. Unlike past spring games, coaches did not split the team into two squads. They kept score based on which quarterback was on the field at the time of a touchdown or field goal. The first-team offense, led by Rix, played against the first-team defense. The second team offense, led by Boldin, played against the second-team defense. Brett Cimorelli kicked field goals of 28 and 48 yards for Rix's team, which was dubbed the gold team. Davy Ford had the only touchdown for Boldin's garnet team, scoring on a five-yard run in the second quarter.
