HOUSTON (AP) -- One of the University of Texas' most heralded football recruits is ecstatic that the Los Angeles Dodgers took him Tuesday in the 12th round of major league baseball's amateur draft.

Cedric Benson, the record-setting running back from Midland Lee who led the school to three consecutive state championships, told Houston television station KRIV that he was just glad somebody picked him up.

"I've always enjoyed playing the game of baseball," Benson said. "Now I have a chance to continue playing it and possibly be in the majors one day."

Benson said he had no plans to play pro baseball this summer, preferring to concentrate on his freshman season at Texas.

In his high school football career, Benson rushed for 8,423 yards to become the Texas Class 5A all-time leading rusher.

His college football eligibility isn't threatened because he hired Houston-based agent Brian Peters only as his adviser.
