Clemson coach likes revised BCS

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Clemson coach Tommy Bowden says he's the wrong family member to ask about changes in the Bowl Championship Series formula.

"You are asking the wrong Bowden," son Tommy said Thursday.

"The Bowden in Tallahassee should be the one answering questions."

Tommy's father, Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, has taken the Seminoles to the past three BCS title games - losing to Tennessee after the 1998 season, beating Virginia Tech the next year and falling to Oklahoma this past January.

The younger Bowden liked the changes announced by BCS coordinator John Swofford, commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Bowden said adding points for beating top teams was a good bonus and while reducing the role of margin of victory would keep teams from piling on late.

"Very few coaches knew exactly what the formulas were, but there was a general feeling that the larger the margin, the higher you would be in the BCS poll the following week," he said.

But Bowden said he'll pay as much attention to the BCS poll now as he did in the past. Bowden said last year he went to bed before the first BCS rankings were announced on national TV.

"I don't spend a lot of time worrying about formulas and computer rankings," he said. "We try to win each game one at a time, then see where we are at the end of the regular season."

After starting 8-0, the Tigers lost three of their final four games in 2000.
