Ivan Maisel's Top 25
Each week, Sports Illustrated college football writer Ivan Maisel discloses his ballot in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. There are plenty of results that I didn't see coming Saturday -- Alabama routing Auburn, 31-7; Tennessee struggling to defeat Kentucky, 38-35; UCLA failing to show up against USC, 27-0 -- but Miami's 59-0 humiliation of Syracuse didn't surprise me. Granted, I believed the final margin would be about half of what it was. The point is that Miami had been embarrassed the previous week in its narrow victory at Boston College and the Hurricanes decided to use the Orangemen as a platform from which to state the case that they, Miami, should be No. 1. Syracuse also never plays well in the Orange Bowl. Humidity, perhaps? Tennessee fell two spots in my vote for not taking Kentucky seriously. BYU had a chance to impress the voters against 7-2 Utah and instead gave fuel to the Cougars' doubters. Great comeback? Yes. Liberty Bowl instead of Fiesta Bowl? Yes. In the SEC West, Auburn remains a game ahead of the field in the loss column, which means that the Tigers can repeat as division champions if they win at LSU on Dec. 1. However, Auburn's collapse at home against Alabama renders the game Friday between LSU and Arkansas as very important. If LSU wins, then the Auburn-LSU winner takes the SEC West. If Arkansas wins, then the Hogs win the division if LSU beats Auburn.
