MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez received a one-year contract extension Friday despite leading the Mountaineers to a 3-8 record in his first season.

The 39-year-old Rodriguez was given a five-year contract a year ago when he was hired to succeed the retiring Don Nehlen. He is paid $402,600 annually, plus incentives.

"We are having a very successful recruiting year, and we want to assure those players making a commitment to WVU that Coach Rodriguez will be their coach throughout their time in Morgantown," Athletic Director Ed Pastilong said.

Rodriguez's no-huddle, spread offense ranked sixth both in scoring and passing offense in the Big East last season. West Virginia posted its worst record since Frank Cignetti's 1978 team was 2-9.

"Rich has displayed enormous growth and energy over the past year and a positive attitude," said university president David C. Hardesty Jr.
