CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Miami running back Frank Gore had surgery Friday to repair ligaments in his right knee and could be ready to play in the fall.

Gore, who ran for 562 yards and five touchdowns last season as a freshman for the national champion Hurricanes, was injured Tuesday during spring practice.

"Frank had extensive damage of the knee, but I'm very optimistic he may be able to play this fall," said Dr. John Uribe, who performed the operation.

Uribe said Gore could be jogging in three months.

"The initial stages of rehab will be painful but, judging by his work ethic, I think he will recover quickly," Uribe said.

Coach Larry Coker was also encouraged but cautious.

"We'd love to have him back this fall, but only if he's fully recovered and ready to play," Coker said.
