Ohio State LB faces gun, drug charges Posted: Sunday April 28, 2002 11:50 AMCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio State linebacker Marco Cooper was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and drug abuse after university police pulled him over for running a red light. A 9 mm handgun and a plastic bag containing 12 white pills, which officers later determined was Ecstasy, were hidden in the center console of Cooper's sport utility vehicle, police said Sunday. Cooper, 19, was stopped about 11 p.m. Saturday, hours after playing in the Buckeyes' annual intrasquad spring scrimmage. His status for the upcoming season -- Cooper was expected to compete for a starting spot as a junior -- has not been determined, athletic director Andy Geiger said Sunday after speaking with coach Jim Tressel. "We have had conversations and consider the issue extremely serious but have not sorted it all out yet," Geiger said. "It's something that we're taking very seriously. It's a very grave matter." According to the arrest report, Cooper was driving without a license and gave officers permission to retrieve a temporary permit from his glove compartment. An officer found a marijuana pipe in the passenger side door handle and ammunition for the handgun between the driver's seat and the center console. The officer then found the gun and the Ecstasy in the center console, the report said. Because the gun charge is a felony, Cooper was being held without bond Sunday in the Franklin County jail. He was scheduled to appear in Municipal Court on Monday, a jail officer said. Cooper, a native of Detroit, also was charged with several traffic violations. His passenger, Jeffrey Howells, 24, of Columbus, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
