DETROIT (AP) -- One University of Michigan football player remained hospitalized Saturday afternoon after a shooting at a campus-area party.

Junior linebacker Carl Diggs and sophomore cornerback Markus Curry were shot when someone involved in an earlier altercation at the party began firing a gun, Ann Arbor police Sgt. Michael Logghe said.

Diggs, 21, of Warren, Ohio, was treated and released Saturday morning, a University of Michigan Hospital official said.

Curry, also 21, was scheduled for surgery Saturday. Family members said he was doing well.

Ann Arbor police had responded to reports of a fight at the party late Friday. The fight was over when officers arrived, but they broke up the party of about 100 people.

After officers left, Diggs and Curry were standing on the street when one of the people involved in the fight began firing a gun, Logghe said. Curry was shot in the back, and Diggs was struck in the leg.

Neither player was believed to have been involved in the fight, and the shooter remained at large Saturday, Logghe said.

Curry's brother, Julius Curry, 23, said Markus Curry was not acquainted with the person who shot him.

Markus Curry, who is from Detroit, was a starter last season until he was suspended after being charged with domestic violence in an incident involving his girlfriend. Curry was sentenced in February to one year probation on an assault charge and is listed in the team's latest roster.

Diggs played in all 12 games last season, recording 42 tackles and one interception.

University of Michigan Athletic Department spokesman Bruce Madej said officials were still trying to sort out exactly what happened.

"We're just concerned about the welfare of the players," Madej said.

Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr, who was attending a Big Ten Conference coaches meeting in Florida, was making arrangements to return early, Madej said.
