QB Leak verbally commits to Florida Posted: Sunday January 05, 2003 10:10 PMUpdated: Monday January 06, 2003 3:58 AM SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Standout prep quarterback Chris Leak verbally committed Sunday night to play at Florida. Leak, a highly regarded prospect out of Charlotte Independence High, made the announcement at halftime of a prep all-star game. The two-time Associated Press player of the year in North Carolina threw for 5,193 yards and 64 touchdowns -- both state records -- with just 12 interceptions in a perfect senior season (16-0). "Out of all the schools that recruited me, there is one that had made a commitment to my future that is second to none," Leak said at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. "With that commitment, I am trusting what I have been told and following my heart." The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Leak finished his career with 15,593 yards passing, 185 touchdowns and 16,662 total yards. The 185 TDs set a national record. Leak, who also urged other recruits to come with him to Florida, chose the Gators over Florida State, Iowa, Southern California and Texas, saying he wanted to play where he could win a national title and get a solid education. Florida quarterback Rex Grossman has decided to forgo his senior season to enter the NFL Draft, but Leak said that had nothing to do with his decision. Grossman "would have been a great tutor for me," Leak said, but "my brother [Tennessee quarterback C.J. Leak] told me to follow my heart, and that's what I did." Verbal commitments are nonbinding until student-athletes sign a national letter of intent. Signing day is Feb. 5.
