Panthers assistant coach interviews for Alabama job

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Carolina Panthers wide receivers coach Richard Williamson interviewed Monday for the head coaching vacancy at Alabama.

Williamson said he met with university president Robert Witt and athletic director Mal Moore in Atlanta on Monday afternoon before flying back to Charlotte.

Williamson, 62, played wide receiver at Alabama in the early 1960s and later spent seven seasons as an assistant coach to legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.

"It is something I am interested in," Williamson told The Gaston Gazette. "I've always said I wanted to return to Alabama and be the head coach. Right now, it's about the only job I would take. If it happens, it happens. If not, I still have a great job here with the Panthers."

Williamson joined the Panthers in 1995 after coaching stints in Kansas City and Tampa Bay. He is the only coach who has been with the Panthers since their inception.

Alabama's job opened Saturday when the university fired Mike Price. The 57-year-old coach, already warned about his behavior, spent hundreds of dollars at a Pensacola, Fla., topless bar. A woman reportedly ordered about $1,000 in food from room service sent to his hotel room the following morning.

Miami Dolphins assistant coach Mike Shula -- a former quarterback for the Crimson Tide -- has emerged as a top candidate to replace Price.
