Player dies from jumping out window

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A western Pennsylvania college football player who police said jumped out of a window to escape his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, who had allegedly broken into her home, has died of his injuries.

Rodney Abercrombie, 23, a senior defensive back at California University of Pennsylvania, died late Thursday night, less than a day after suffering severe head injuries after jumping out the second-story window of an apartment building.

Police said Abercrombie was asleep at his girlfriend's Aliquippa apartment, about 20 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, when her former boyfriend, Durran Long, climbed onto an awning, broke a window and entered the apartment early Thursday.

Police said Abercrombie and Long scuffled in a hallway and Abercrombie ran into a bedroom and shut the door. Long apparently forced the door open and Abercrombie jumped out of the window to escape, police said.

Long, 19, of Aliquippa, was arrested at a Beaver hospital, where he was being treated for a cut on his arm. He was charged with aggravated assault, trespassing and other counts.

A message left at Long's home was not returned to The Associated Press. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
