HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) -- Southern Mississippi freshman linebacker Chaz Richards was taken to an Alabama hospital after a weekend traffic accident, coach Jeff Bower said.

"He was in an automobile accident on the way to Hattiesburg," Bower said. "He totaled his truck, and the last we heard, he was in a Montgomery (Ala.) hospital, but we don't think that it was anything serious."

Richards, a linebacker from Troy, Ala., was expected to report Sunday for preseason practice. He was the only player who did not report on time, Bower said.

The first full practice for all players is scheduled for Friday.

Southern Miss opens the season Aug. 30 when the Golden Eagles travel to play California.
