Overheated 'Noles Three Florida State players leave practice with heat issuesPosted: Friday August 08, 2003 11:00 PMTALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Three Florida State players had to be treated for heat-related injuries after temperatures neared 90 degrees during the Seminoles' midmorning practice. Freshman D.J. Norris, who moved from tight end to defensive end earlier in the week, spent much of the morning in an ice tub while fullbacks B.J. Dean, the anticipated starter, and walk-on James Coleman were also removed due to heat-related circumstances. The Seminoles aren't taking any chances with the heat, head trainer Randy Oravetz said. "Heat got a couple of them, but Randy got them out of there before it could get serious," coach Bobby Bowden said. Friday's workout was the first since the season opened on Wednesday that wasn't affected by thunderstorms. Bowden had switched practices to earlier in the day to avoid any inclement weather. Meanwhile, Bowden expressed encouragement with the progress being made in the first few days of practice. Due to new NCAA regulations, freshman did not get the usual three-day acclimation period before returning players report. "You can see the learning coming," Bowden said. "They looked better yesterday than the day before. They looked better today than they did yesterday. That is the key too, is trying to get better every practice." However, Bowden added that the play of the quarterback position has been inconsistent thus far, led by starter Chris Rix and Fabian Walker, who started the Sugar Bowl. Rix's inconsistency last year led to his benching and a near-team revolt. "Typical early season," Bowden said. "Timing is not what you want yet, but it's not alarming." Redshirt freshman Wyatt Sexton has been taking snaps with the third team, while Lorne Sam has returned to wide receiver after taking snaps at quarterback during the spring.
