CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Auburn has asked out of football games with Clemson scheduled for 2006 and 2007, officials from both schools say.

Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips says Auburn must find the team an acceptable replacement opponent or pay a $250,000 buyout.

Auburn athletic director David Housel says there was no disrespect meant to Clemson, only financial considerations. He says the school needs seven home games a year to pay for a $30 million stadium renovation. Canceling the games with Clemson will let them do that, Housel said.

"We're working with Terry Don and Clemson to try and help everybody find suitable opponents," Housel said.
