Yearning for the hardcourt Washington WR Frederick wants to play hoops againPosted: Saturday August 09, 2003 7:13 PMSEATTLE (AP) -- University of Washington starting wide receiver Charles Frederick wants to play basketball again. Frederick, who will be a junior in football eligibility this fall, was a reserve guard for the Huskies' basketball team in 2001-2002 under then coach Bob Bender. He didn't go out for basketball under coach Lorenzo Romar last season because he wanted to concentrate on football. The 6-foot Frederick, from Pope John Paul II High School in Miami, Fla., plans to ask Romar if he can rejoin the team. He would be a redshirt sophomore in basketball. He was a highly rated basketball player in high school. "My dad wants me to give it a try," Frederick told The News Tribune of Tacoma. "He thinks I have a lot of talent." Frederick said he plays with the basketball team regularly and said he is most similar to 5-foot-8 point guard Nate Robinson, last season's starting cornerback for the Huskies who quit to focus on basketball. "I would never quit the football team," Frederick said. "My dad would fly up here and kill me." Frederick started two games and played in 13 last season, when he caught 30 passes for 601 yards as a sophomore.
