MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia football coach Rich Rodriguez has undergone successful surgery on his right knee, then returned to the Mountaineers' practice field.

Rodriguez said he injured the knee several months ago but hesitated to have surgery on it.

"When we started practice, I couldn't run," he said.

His surgery was completed Sunday morning, and he returned to Mountaineer Field for a staff meeting later that morning and walked through practice later that afternoon.

"They say I'll be running by the end of the week," Rodriguez said.

The Mountaineers open the season Aug. 30 at home against Wisconsin. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
