CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Virginia wide receiver Michael McGrew broke his leg in practice and will miss the 2003 season, coach Al Groh said Thursday.

McGrew was Virginia's top returning wideout with 27 receptions for 428 yards and two touchdowns last season. The Cavaliers had hoped McGrew would become their go-to receiver after four-year starter Billy McMullen's departure to the NFL.

The 6-2 senior from Birmingham, Ala., underwent surgery on the leg Thursday, two days after he was injured in practice. Groh said the surgery went well, but he refused to say which leg McGrew broke.

"It doesn't make any difference, he's already out for the season," he said.

McGrew played as a true freshman, so he could take a medical redshirt this season and return in 2004.

"That's certainly available to us if that's something he would be interested in doing," Groh said Wednesday.

With the loss of McGrew, Virginia's most experienced wideouts are junior Ottowa Anderson and senior Ryan Sawyer, who combined for 28 receptions for 379 yards and five touchdowns last season.

The Cavaliers, who were 9-5 last year, open the 2003 season at home Aug. 30 against Duke.
