EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan State quarterback Jeff Smoker picked apart the defense Saturday for a good passing day in a 125-play controlled scrimmage.

"Jeff Smoker had a big day throwing the football," Spartans coach John L. Smith said. "Jeff is beginning to let the offense work for him. He feels more comfortable with the offense every time he steps on the field."

Smoker, a native of Manheim, Pa., who was suspended for the final five games of last season because of a substance-abuse problem, completed 11-of-19 for 194 yards and four touchdowns. His first three series all resulted in scoring passes.

Smith has said if Smoker is better than Damon Dowdell or Drew Stanton during practice, he will start in the opening game on Aug. 30 at home against Western Michigan.

Dowdell hit 5-of-10 for 85 yards, including a 66-yard scoring pass to Matt Trannon. Stanton connected 4-of-12 for 59 yards, including a 35-yarder to Trannon.

On the other side of the ball, linebacker Mike Labinjo recorded four tackles for loss.
