GAINESVILLE, Florida (Ticker) -- Florida coach Steve Spurrier will find out soon enough if his team is worthy of its No. 1 ranking when Tennessee visits "The Swamp" next week. But before the Gators start thinking about the Volunteers, they have another tuneup on tap Saturday against what should be an overmatched Louisiana-Monroe. Florida (1-0) kicked off its season last week with a 49-14 victory over Marshall, improving to 65-4 at home under Spurrier, including 48-0 against unranked teams. Rex Grossman, who won the starting job from fellow sophomore Brock Berlin, threw for a career-best 375 yards and three touchdowns as the Gators opened a 35-0 halftime lead. Earnest Graham rushed for a career-high three touchdowns. Florida's defense dominated early, recording five sacks, including two each by Alex Brown and Andra Davis. Brown moved within two of Alonzo Johnson's school career record of 27.5 sacks. While the Gators began a season atop both major polls for the first time in school history, they were surpassed by Miami in this week's Associated Press poll. Spurrier may look for more off a balanced attack against UL-Monroe as the Gators rushed for only 111 yards against Marshall. UL-Monroe (0-1), a member of the Sun Belt Conference, rushed for only 60 yards in last week's 20-9 loss to Sam Houston State. Andy Chance completed 18-of-36 for 186 yards. Former San Diego Chargers quarterback Stan Humphries took over this year as offensive coordinator for the Indians, who were shut out three times last season and scored more than 19 points just once. UL-Monroe made one previous trip to Gainesville, suffering a 42-10 loss in 1998 when the school was known as Northeast Louisiana. The Indians are 2-16-1 all-time against the Southeastern Conference, beating Kentucky in 1994 and Mississippi State in 1995.
