CORVALLIS, Oregon (Ticker) -- The only blemish for Oregon State in 2000 was a loss to Washington. But there have been several black marks for the Beavers in 2001 and a win over the eighth-ranked Huskies on Saturday would serve only to salvage what has been a dismal season. To make matters worse, the Beavers have lost 13 straight games to Washington since Oregon State's last win in 1985. The latest disappointment for Oregon State (3-5, 2-4 Pac-10) came in a 16-13 overtime loss at Southern California last week. Ryan Cesca, a first-team All-Pac-10 kicker a year ago, missed a 35-yard field goal attempt with 6:14 to play and a 29-yarder with 33 seconds left. The Beavers also had a blocked punt recovered for a touchdown. Washington (7-1, 5-1), by contrast, is part of a three-way tie with Oregon and Washington State for the Pac-10 lead and tries to avoid a letdown before next week's showdown with Washington State. Willie Hurst ran for 108 yards and three scores for Washington in a 42-28 win over Stanford last week. Washington has come from behind in the fourth quarter in 13 of its 25 wins under coach Rick Neuheisel, including five times this season. One of those triumphs was last year against Oregon State, when the Huskies rallied from a one-point deficit after three quarters to win, 33-30. Rich Alexis and Paul Arnold each went over 100 yards rushing for the Huskies while Ken Simonton had 104 yards for the Beavers. Simonton, a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate, has been held to 629 yards this season. Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith has as many TD passes as interceptions (eight) this season, but has fared well against the Huskies with a pair of three TD games. Arnold, who was switched from tailback to receiver last spring, is averaging 97.5 receiving yards in his last four games.
