AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- Tom Haynes has a daunting task in his first game as Kansas' interim coach on Saturday as the Jayhawks visit fifth-ranked Texas in a Big 12 Conference contest. Haynes, the Jayhawks' defense coordinator, will coach Kansas for the final three games after Terry Allen was fired following Saturday's 51-7 loss to Nebraska. Allen never had a winning record in his four-plus years with the Jayhawks, posting a 20-33 mark. Kansas has lost its last three games by a combined 129-47 score. Texas (8-1, 5-1 Big 12 South) likely will not show the Jayhawks much mercy. The Longhorns have reeled off four straight wins since their 14-3 loss to Oklahoma and are still clinging to national championship hopes. Texas is fourth in the latest Bowl Championship Series standings. The Texas offense has been in high gear during the winning streak, surpassing 40 points in three of the wins. The four victories have come by an average of 30 points. During that stretch, Chris Simms has thrown for nearly 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns. He threw for 271 yards and a pair of TDs in last week's 49-10 victory over Baylor. Cedric Benson rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, becoming the first Texas freshman to rush for more than 100 yards in four straight games. He also tied Earl Campbell's 26-year-old freshman school record of four 100-yard games in a season. The Longhorns held Baylor to 195 yards, including a meager eight yards on the ground, the lowest total against Texas since Texas A&M rushed for minus-seven yards in 1998. A victory Saturday will give the Longhorns at least nine wins for the fourth straight season, a feat they last accomplished from 1961-64. Texas still has a shot to beat out Oklahoma in the Big 12 South, but the Longhorns will need the Sooners to lose one of their remaining three games. Texas is off next week before facing Texas A&M in the traditional regular season finale on November 23. The Longhorns have won 12 straight games at home and are 20-2 at Memorial Stadium under Mack Brown. Texas is 4-0 here this year and is seeking its third undefeated home season in Brown's four seasons as coach. The Jayhawks (2-6, 1-5 North) were held to a season-low 203 yards in last week's loss, their 33rd consecutive defeat against the Cornhuskers. Texas has won four straight against Kansas and leads the all-time series, 4-2.
