NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- First-year Georgia coach Mark Richt hopes to continue the bowl success enjoyed by his predecessor when the 19th-ranked Bulldogs face Boston College in the Music City Bowl.

Under Jim Donnan, the Bulldogs set a school record by winning bowl games in four straight years, including a 37-14 victory over Virginia in last year's Oahu Bowl. However, Donnan was fired despite a five-year mark of 40-19.

Georgia set another school record this season by reaching at least eight wins for the fifth consecutive year. Richt posted the best mark for a first-year Georgia coach since Herman Stegemen went 8-0-1 in 1920.

The Bulldogs are making their 37th bowl appearance, which ranks sixth nationally. They have an all-time bowl mark of 19-14-3. Georgia will be participating in its 18th different bowl game, more than any other school in the country.

The Bulldogs (8-3) are facing Boston College (7-4) for the fourth time. Georgia won the first two contests in 1950 and 1951, but the Eagles took the most recent meeting, posting a 27-24 victory in the 1986 Hall of Fame Bowl.

With sophomore tailback Musa Smith sidelined with a hip flexor, Georgia's backfield for the last three games featured one-time fullback Verron Haynes at tailback and J.T. Wall at fullback.

But the strength of the offense is freshman quarterback David Greene, who threw for 2,789 yards and 17 scores.

Boston College ended the regular season with a 39-28 loss at Syracuse to finish tied for third in the Big East Conference with Virginia Tech. However, on November 10, the Eagles nearly upset top-ranked Miami, the nation's only undefeated team which is headed to the Rose Bowl to play Nebraska.

William Green, the nation's second-leading runner who averaged 155.9 yards per game, could be making his final appearance for the Eagles. After being suspended for the Miami game for missing a practice, the junior hinted he would enter the NFL draft.

Green has rushed for 1,559 yards this season, the second-highest total in Boston College history. He has scored 33 touchdowns and needs one to tie Keith Barnette's school record set from 1973-75.

Brian St. Pierre led the Big East with 25 touchdown passes, tying Glenn Foley (1993) for second on Boston College's single-season list.

The Eagles have an all-time bowl mark of 5-7. They are making their third straight bowl appearance and beat Arizona State, 31-17, in the Aloha Bowl last season.
