Suggs, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee in last year's opener, will be in the lineup Sunday when No. 16 Virginia Tech faces Arkansas State of the Sun Belt Conference in the Hispanic College Fund Classic.
Suggs made a huge impact as a freshman in 2000, leading Division I-A in scoring (15.27 points per game) and touchdowns (28). He also led the Big East Conference in rushing (109.1 yards per game).
But he tore his knee in the third quarter of last year's opener against Connecticut after rushing for 99 yards on 12 carries and underwent surgery on September 14. He also was diagnosed with a tear of the medial meniscus.
Kevin Jones filled the void in Suggs' absence, rushing for a school freshman record 957 yards and earning Big East Rookie of the Year honors.
The combination of Suggs and Jones could give the Hokies one of the best rushing tandems in the country.
Quarterback Grant Noel is ready to start his senior season despite a torn ACL in his left knee. Noel, who took over after Michael Vick left school for the NFL draft after his sophomore season, suffered the injury just days before Virginia Tech's spring game.
When tests showed there was not a sigficant amount of looseness in the knee, Noel opted to forego surgery that likely would have ended his college career.
Virginia Tech, which was picked second by the coaches in the Big East behind Miami, will be without All-conference cornerback Ronyell Whitaker, who was suspended two games for a violation of team rules. Wide receiver Terrell Parham and defensive end Lamarr Cobb were suspended one game for the same reason.
Steve Roberts, who posted a 14-9 record at Division I-AA Northwestern State (Lousiana), takes over an Arkansas State program that struggled to a 2-9 record last season. The only wins for the Indians came against Lousiana-Lafayette and Idaho.
Virginia Tech won both previous meetings with Arkanas State, 34-7 in 1994 and 50-0 five years ago. The win in 1997 made Frank Beamer the winningest coch in Virginia Tech history, passing Bill Dooley.
The game was pushed back a day to not interfere with Virginia Tech freshmen, who will be moving into their dormitories on Saturday.
