RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- A relatively easy non-conference schedule continues for North Carolina State when the 24th-ranked Wolfpack host Division I-AA East Tennessee State.
The season began with a victory over New Mexico last week and includes early-season games against Navy and another Division I-AA foe, Massachusetts. The toughest game outside the Atlantic Coast Conference is at Texas Tech on September 21.
Philip Rivers was responsible for five touchdowns, passing for three and rushing for two, as the Wolfpack posted a 34-14 victory over New Mexico in the Black Coaches Association Bowl last week.
Rivers tossed TD strikes of 21 and 12 yards to Bryan Peterson, helping North Carolina State open a 21-0 halftime lead. Rivers has thrown at least one TD pass in 21 of his 25 career starts.
T.A. McLendon made a good first impression, running for 79 yards, the most by an NC State freshman since Anthony Barbour had 81 in the 1988 season opener.
A member of the Southern Conference, East Tennessee State returns all 11 defensive starters from a team than was 6-5 a year ago. The problem was on offense where the Buccaneers scored 14 points or fewer five times.
The teams will meet for the first time since a 49-0 win by the Wolfpack in 1988. ETSU won the first meeting the previous year.
