CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- Boston College escaped with a 30-29 victory over Baylor when Kyle Atteberry's extra point attempt after a touchdown in overtime sailed wide left. Atteberry, who also had a kick blocked, shanked his attempt after Jermaine Alfred scored for Baylor on a one-yard run. It spoiled the debut of coach Kevin Steele. Ced Washington rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns, including a one-yard scoring run that gave Boston College the lead in overtime. McKinley Bowie's 83-yard interception return with 25 seconds left in the second quarter staked Baylor (0-1) to a 16-7 lead. The Eagles tied it in the third quarter on John Matich's 21-yard field goal and Washington's four-yard TD run. Boston College grabbed a 23-16 lead on Washington's six-yard scoring run with 6:42 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Bears pulled even just a minute later on Alfred's 73-yard TD pass to Andra Fuller. Carlton Rowe's one-yard run put BC up 7-3 wiith 2:33 left in the first quarter. But Baylor wide receiver Lanny O'Steen recovered a fumble in the end to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive that gave the Bears a 10-7 lead 5:21 into the second. Boston College rushed for 354 yards, while holding Baylor to just 129 on the ground. Tim Hasselbeck completed 13-of-29 passes for 101 yards. Alfred completed 15-of-18 for 244 yards and two touchdowns, while Darrell Bush rushed for 64 yards on 17 carries. Fuller had six receptions for 121 yards. Boston College increased its lead in the series to 3-0. The teams were meeting for the first time since 1922, when the Eagles posted a 33-0 victory.
