ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Drew Brees kicked off his Heisman Trophy campaign by throwing four touchdown passes as 23rd-ranked Purdue posted a 47-13 victory over Central Florida, which began life without Daunte Culpepper. Brees, a 6-1 junior, tossed scores of 27, 18, two and 22 yards. His final TD pass went to Vinny Sutherland, giving the Boilermakers (1-0) a 37-6 lead with 3 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter. Last season, Brees passed for a Big Ten Conference-record 3,983 yards and 39 touchdowns. He completed 26-of-43 passes for 273 yards and one interception. Culpepper also was a record-setting quarterback, but he graduated and was taken with the 11th overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings in April's NFL draft. Brees outdueled Culpepper as Purdue posted a 35-7 victory over the Golden Knights (0-1) last year in West Lafayette, Indiana, in the only prior meeting between the schools. The job of replacing Culpepper falls to junior college transfer Vic Penn, who got himself and the Golden Knights off to a good start by hooking up with Kenny Clark on a 26-yard score to open the scoring 3:41 into the contest. Mike Hedge made a bad snap on the conversiopn attempt to leave the score 6-0. The Boilermakers got on the scoreboard when Hedge snapped the ball through the end zone on a punt attempt for a safety and Brees found Chris Daniels for a 27-yard TD with 59 seconds left in the first quarter to make it 9-6. Brees and Tim Stratton hooked up on an 18-yard score early in the second quarter. Brees continued his aerial assault with eight seconds left before halftime, finding Randall Lane for a two-yard TD to make it 23-6. Even kicker Travis Dorsch got into the passing act, throwing a four-yard scoring pass to Chris Randolph after his 22-yard field goal attempt was blocked seven minutes into the third quarter. Brees and Sutherland hooked up for their score four 4:23 later and linebacker Matt Rose returned an interception 25 yards for a score 15 seconds thereafter. Dorsch booted a 37-yard field goal early in the fourth to give Purdue a 47-6 lead. Central Florida's offense was able to produce a touchdown with just under four minutes left as Omari Howard plowed his way for a two-yard score.
