ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (Ticker) -- Even with coach George O'Leary in the press box, 11th-ranked Georgia Tech had no problem routing Navy, 49-14, in the season opener for both schools.

The Yellow Jackets (1-0) had not scored as many points on the road since a 71-6 victory over Chattanooga on October 11, 1913 They had 341 yards rushing, their highest total in six years, on 61 carries.

"They are definitely a top-10 team," Navy coach Charlie Weatherbie said. "I'm not sure they are 35 points better than we are."

Phillip Rogers rushed for three touchdowns and quarterback Joe Hamilton had a hand in three more for Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets raced to a 28-7 lead by halftime and never looked back.

"Joe made some plays, the running backs made some plays and we had a chance to play a lot of people," O'Leary said. "It was a good first outing on both sides of the ball."

O'Leary was forced to coach from the press box after violating NCAA rules last season by illegally loaning money to a former player.

His team prepared for next week's Atlantic Coast Conference battle against top-ranked Florida State by winning its sixth straight game and seventh in a row on the road.

"We were able to work a lot of our depth today," Hamilton said.

"Let's go out and have a good week of practice and see what happens."

Georgia Tech also snapped a three-game losing streak to Navy and improved to 14-9 in the all-time series.

Rogers, a senior who never had more than three TDs in a season, headed a devastating ground game, carrying 16 times for 80 yards.

"I had a hard week of practice, and I felt really good today," he said. "The field was great, and I have to give the respect to the offensive line. They had a lot to do with my day today."

Navy (0-1) gained 192 yards on 47 carries in its normal option attack, but quarterback Brian Broadwater was held to just 47 yards on 25 rushes.

Rogers, who eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for his career, scored on a two-yard run and a pair of one-yard plunges. His two-yard TD with 6 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter opened a 35-7 bulge.

Navy had tied it, 7-7, on a four-yard run by Dre Brittingham --his first career TD -- but Hamilton rushed for a score and passed for another in a 4:45 span to put Georgia Tech ahead 21-7.

Hamilton rushed 11 times for 39 yards and completed 12-of-17 passes for 139 yards and two scores. His 40-yard connection with running back Joe Burns 2:36 into the fourth quarter made it 49-7.

Burns, a sophomore who led the team in rushing last season with 529 yards, gained 47 yards on eight carries. Ed Wilder added another 66 yards on six touches.

Broadwater, who was 9-of-18 for 133 yards, scored on a one-yard run late in the third quarter. Raheem Lambert was the team's leading rusher, carrying 13 times for 92 yards.
