SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- Freshman Troy Nunes threw three touchdown passes, two of them to Quinton Spotwood, as Syracuse tuned up for Michigan by pounding Central Michigan, 47-7, in its home opener. Nunes completed 8-of-13 passes for 170 yards. Madei Williams, also competing to become Donovan McNabb's successor, was 5-of-6 for 91 yards. Neither was intercepted. Syracuse, which is 2-0 for the first time since 1993, welcomes No. 5 Michigan to the Carrier Dome next Saturday night. The Orangemen played without star linebacker Keith Bulluck, who was suspended for one game by coach Paul Pasqualoni for a violation of team rules. Spotwood, who sat out most of last season after suffering a knee injury, caught six passes for 135 yards. He hauled in a 56-yard score late in the first quarter to give the Orangemen a 17-0 lead and was on the other end of Nunes' 43-yard TD strike seven minutes into the second period that made it 24-7. Cornerback Will Allen returned a blocked punt two yards for a touchdown and Nate Trout's 34-yard field goal, his second of the game, gave Syracuse a commanding halftime advantage. The Orangmen racked up 495 yards of offense while holding the Chippewas to 241 yards. Pete Shepherd was 16-of-29 for 165 yards for Central Michigan (1-1). This was the first meeting between the schools but not the Orangemen's first experience with the Mid-American Conference. They opened their season with a 35-12 victory over Toledo. Jammarl O'Neal totaled 50 yards on five receptions for Central Michigan, which ventured into the state of New York for the first time. Eric Flowers, who has topped the 100-yard mark 11 times in his career, was held to 22 yards on eight carries for the Chippewas. Vince Webber led Central Michigan with 62 yards on 16 attempts.
