PROVO, Utah (Ticker) -- In the first game in the Mountain West Conference, Brigham Young was closer to a shutout than a shootout. Lucas Staley ran for two touchdowns and caught another and BYU's defense shut out No. 24 Colorado State for three quarters, cruising to a 34-13 victory in the new conference's first game. Staley carried 14 times for 65 yards and caught three passes for 35 yards. He had a one-yard TD run eight minutes into the game and added a seven-yard scoring catch 10 1/2 minutes later to make it 14-0. Staley had a five-yard scoring jaunt with 1:40 to go in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 31-0. Kevin Feterik was sharp, completing 28-of-37 passes for 310 yards. He also found Jaron Dabney with a 15-yard TD toss that stretched the lead to 21-0 with 1:01 remaining in the first half. The defense picked off Colorado State's Matt Newton three times and did not allow a score until the first play of the fourth quarter. Newton threw touchdown passes of 30 yards to Pete Rebstock and 40 yards to Dallas Davis. The solid performance on both sides of the ball should help the Cougars (2-0) replace the Rams (2-1) in the top 25. BYU and Colorado State were the two highest-ranked schools of the eight that broke away from the Western Athletic Conference, which was known for its wild, high-scoring affairs and lack of defense. It was the 245th career win for BYU coach LaVell Edwards, who won 18 WAC crowns and a national title in 1984 in his 27 seasons with the Cougars. Despite winning their first two games, the Rams allowed 738 passing yards and the Cougars took full advantage of that weakness. Feterik completed passes to 10 different receivers. Margin Hooks caught five passes for 72 yards and Ben Horton had five for 60 for the Cougars, who held a 416-317 advantage in total yards. Newton was 26-of-44 for 289 yards. Davis caught five passes for 85 yards and Rebstock had three for 42 for the Rams, who were without injured fullback Kevin McDougal and collected just 28 yards on the ground.
