PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Cedric Washington ran for two touchdowns and John Matich booted a pair of field goals as Boston College defeated winless Rutgers, 27-7, in the Big East Conference opener for both teams.

Washington racked up 147 yards on 21 carries and Tim Hasselback completed 17-of-22 passes for 168 yards and a score for the Eagles (3-0, 1-0 Big East), who are halfway to an expected 6-0 start.

Boston College plays Northeastern, Temple and Pittsburgh in its next three games.

Playing without leading rusher Jacki Crooks, Rutgers (0-3, 0-1) was held to a meager 79 yards on the ground. Mike McMahon tried to compensate, completing 16-of-32 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted three times.

Crooks was one of five players suspended earlier in the week by Rutgers coach Terry Shea for a violation of team rules. None of the other four players had seen action this season.

The Eagles raced to a 17-0 lead and never looked back. Matich opened the scoring with a 31-yard field goal early in the first quarter and Washington scored from eight yards out midway through the second period. Matich connected from 35 yards 5 1/2 minutes into the second half.

Rutgers finally got on the scoreboard moments later when McMahon hit a streaking Errol Johnson with a 56-yard scoring pass. But the Eagles immediately answered as Hasselbeck and DuJuan Daniels hooked up for 21-yard score.

Daniels caught three passes for 36 yards and Dedrick DeWalt totaled 71 yards on four receptions for the Eagles, who racked up 427 yards compared to 307 for Rutgers.

Washington's 12-yard TD scamper 6:14 into the final period completed the scoring.
