SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) -- Quarterback Troy Nunes accounted for two scores and cornerback Ian McIntosh returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown as Syracuse opened the Big East Conference season with a 30-7 victory over West Virginia. Nate Trout kicked three field goals and the three-time defending league champion Orangemen (3-1, 1-0 Big East) completely flustered Moutaineers quarterback Marc Bulger in avenging last season's 35-28 last-second loss in Morgantown. The Big East's most experienced quarterback entering the season, Bulger was only 9-of-14 for 85 yards against a Syracuse defense that has allowed just 44 points in four games. West Virginia (1-3, 0-1) finally got some production from a ground game that had been dormant all season. Avon Cobourne, whose status was questionable due to a hip pointer, carried 18 times for 63 of the Mountaineers' 115 rushing yards. The seven points scored by West Virginia was deceptive. Jay Taylor kicked a 23-yard field goal in the second quarter and the Mountaineers record two safeties, the latter coming on a bad punt snap by Syracuse late in the second quarter that brought West Virginia within 10-7. But the Orangemen bounced back when Nunes hit Pat Woodcock for a 22-yard score with 13 seconds left before halftime. Nunes was 9-of-13 for 102 yards and also ran for a 24-yard score early in the second quarter that put Syracuse ahead for good at 10-5. Madei Williams saw limited action for the Orangemen and was 1-of-5 for six yards with an interception. Trout connected from 43 and 23 yards, his second 23-yarder of the game, in a 4:51 span of the fourth quarter to give Syracuse a commanding 23-7 advantage. McIntosh's first career touchdown capped the scoring. The younger brother of former Syracuse tailback Kyle McIntosh, he began his career as a wide receiver. Syracuse leads the all-time series, 28-19.
