MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Kirk Farmer threw and ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter as Missouri pulled away for a 27-17 victory over Memphis. Farmer, who shares the quarterback duties with Jim Dougherty, gave Missouri a 20-10 lead with 12:28 to play on a 21-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Blakley. He padded the lead less than five minutes later with a two-yard plunge with 7:55 to play. Missouri (3-1) quickly shook off the effects of last week's 40-10 pounding administered by Nebraska. Dougherty hooked up with Kent Layman on a 20-yard scoring pass 46 seconds into the contest, and field goals of 34 and 45 yards by Brad Hammerich propeled Missouri to a 13-0 lead at halftime. Memphis (1-4) finally broke through with a 37-yard field goal by Ryan White 5:28 into the second half. A 33-yard pass from Travis Anglin to Ken Coutain made it 13-10 with 4:02 left in the third quarter. Farmer and Dougherty combined to complete 11-of-19 passes for 139 yards. DeVaughn Black ran for 111 yards on 27 carries as Missouri amassed 219 rushing yards on 58 attempts and held possession for more than 36 minutes. Memphis' quarterback tandem of Anglin and Neil Suber did not fare as well, going 12-of-29 for 153 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Memphis committed four turnovers and had just 52 rushing yards. Missouri has won two of the three games between the schools and avenged a 19-16 loss in 1996.
