PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Pac-10, no problem. Any other conference, big problem for Stanford. Chris Kasteler threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns and Casey LeBlanc's 19-yard touchdown run with 5:48 to play put San Jose State ahead for good as it handed Pac-10 leader Stanford its second non-conference loss of the season, 44-39. The Cardinal (3-2) opened their season with a devastating 69-17 loss to No. 15 Texas of the Big 12, but recovered with three straight wins against conference opponents Washington State, Arizona and UCLA. But Kasteler dueled Stanford signal-caller Joe Borchard as the schools exchanged scores over the first three quarters. The Cardinal pulled within 31-29 on Brian Allen's 39-yard TD jaunt as time expired in the third period. Stanford took a 32-31 lead just under four minutes into the fourth quarter before Kasteler and the Spartans (3-2) of the Western Athletic Conference took control. Kasteler engineered a 14-play, 83-yard drive that culminated in LeBlanc's scoring run, giving San Jose State a 37-32 lead. On their next possession, the Spartans put away the Cardinal when the senior quarterback found Steven Pulley for a 54-yard TD strike, making it 44-32 with 2:33 remaining. Kasteler, who completed 24-of-43 passes with one interception, also hit Pulley on a 15-yard TD with just over five minutes left in the third quarter as the Spartans opened a 24-15 lead. Borchard, who was 19-of-37 for 313 yards and two TDs, answered by hitting Troy Walters for a 25-yard score on the next possession, pulling Stanford within 24-22 with 3:34 left in the third quarter. Linebacker Ron Ockimey re-established a nine-point bulge for the Spartans when he returned a fumble 38 yards just 2:20 later. Darian Morton rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries for San Jose State, which has won three in a row overall and two straight against Stanford. Allen led Stanford's ground game with 67 yards on six carries and Borchard capped the scoring when he connected with Troy Walters on a seven-yard TD pass with 1:47 to go. San Jose State edged Stanford in total yardage, 486-475. It was 3-for-4 on fourth-down conversions while denying Stanford on four fourth-down attempts. Stanford leads the all-time series, 42-12-1.
