DALLAS (Ticker) -- Major Applewhite took advantage of Oklahoma's porous secondary by throwing for three touchdowns as No. 23 Texas overcame an early 17-point deficit to post a 38-28 victory at the Cotton Bowl in the 94th meeting between the Red River rivals.

Applewhite completed 22 of a career-high 47 passes for 328 yards yards and Hodges Mitchell rushed for a career-high 204 yards on 30 carries as the Longhorns (5-2, 2-1 Big 12 South) rallied from a 17-0 hole in the first quarter.

It marked the second straight week Oklahoma (3-2, 1-1 South) squandered a big lead. The Sooners suffered a 34-30 loss to Notre Dame after blowing a 30-14 halftime advantage.

Texas won eight of 10 against Oaklahoma in the 1990s, increasing its lead in the all-time series to 55-34-5. The Longhorns, who gained 553 yards, rebounded from last week's 35-17 loss to No.

10 Kansas State.

Oklahoma's Josh Heupel was 31-of-48 for 311 yards and two scores but was picked off three times. He had scoring strikes of 44 yards to Antwone Savage and 30 yards to Jarrail Jackson in the first quarter.

After Texas pulled within 17-9 on three field goals by Kris Stockton, Applewhite tossed an 11-yard TD pass to Ryan Nunez with 49 seconds remaining in the first half and hit him with the two-point conversion pass to tie the contest, 17-17.

The Longhorns took the lead for good 4:04 into the third quarter on a 21-yard TD run by Mitchell.

Oklahoma ended Texas' string of 24 straight points on Tim Duncan's 28-yard field goal, but Applewhite fired a 48-yard scoring strike to Kwame Cavil to make it 31-20 midway through the third period.

The Sooners used a bit of trickery to get back in the game as backup quarterback Patrick Fletcher tossed a four-yard TD pass to Duncan on a fake field goal with 27 seconds left in the third quarter. Fletcher hit Savage with the conversion pass to bring Oklahoma within 31-28.

But Applewhite added an 18-yard TD toss to Nunez just under seven minutes into the final quarter to give the Longhorns a 10-point cushion.

With Texas trying to run out the clock, cornerback Mike Woods recovered Mitchell's fumble at the Longhorns 39 with 4:19 remaining.

After Longhorns cornerback Ervis Hill saved a touchdown by knocking away the ball from Oklahoma wide receiver Damien Mackey inside the 5, Heupel hit Jackson 21 yards to the Texas 18. But cornerback Ahmad Brooks sealed the win by intercepting Heupel at the 15.
