CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia (Ticker) -- Catching all those passes has taught Duke wide receiver Scottie Montgomery a thing or two about throwing them. The senior wide receiver had a bizarre nine-yard touchdown pass to Rich Flowers with six seconds to play in regulation and Spencer Romine had a game-winning seven-yarder to Benjamin Watson in overtime as the Blue Devils rallied for a 24-17 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Virginia. Montgomery had eight catches for 172 yards, including a pair for 46 yards on the game-tying march for Duke (1-4, 1-1 ACC). After Romine hit Flowers with a 15-yard pass to the 9, Blue Devils coach Carl Franks called for a trick play. Letavious Wilks received a pitch, then fumbled. Montgomery picked up the ball on one bounce and fired a desperation pass across the field. Romine appeared to be the intended receiver, but Flowers came back to the ball and was sprung by a block from his quarterback before lunging into the end zone. Both teams missed field goals on their first overtime possession. Virginia's Todd Braverman missed a 44-yard field goal but the game continued when Duke's Sims Lehnhardt missed a 35-yarder. Virginia (3-3, 3-2) won the toss for the second overtime and opted to play defense. Montgomery drew an interference penalty that moved the ball to the 10, and two plays later, Romine hooked up with Watson. The Cavaliers almost tied the game on their first play, but Ahmad Hawkins caught Dan Ellis' pass just out of bounds near the end zone. After a three-yard pass to Billy Baber, Blue Devils cornerback Lamar Grant intercepted a pass at the 5. It was Montgomery's third 100-yard receiving game of his career. Romine completed 16-of-35 passes for 246 yards but was picked off twice. The Blue Devils snapped a seven-game losing streak dating back to last season and beat Virginia for the first time since a 28-25 win in 1994. Ellis was 21-of-39 for 164 yards but was intercepted twice. Eight different Virginia players caught at least one pass and Thomas Jones rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He leads the ACC with 888 yards.
