LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Ticker) -- Kentucky again showed a dominant defense can be just as valuable as quarterback Dusty Bonner, coasting to a 31-5 victory over Louisiana State in a Southeastern Conference matchup. Bonner drew comparisons to former Wildcats signal-caller Tim Couch early this season, but it has been Kentucky's defense which has been the key to the team's success recently. The unit intercepted three passes from Josh Booty and held Louisiana State to just 57 yards in the second half. The defense of the Wildcats (5-2, 3-1 SEC East) limited South Carolina to three points and 79 yards through three quarters last week, forcing four turnovers in a 30-10 victory. Kentucky had surrendered 20 points or more in all but one of its first five games. Bonner failed to reach the end zone but still had a solid game, completing 26-of-41 attempts for 294 yards with an interception. Derek Homer had a pair of five-yard touchdown runs and Anthony White added a 34-yard TD scamper. White, who also made eight catches for 82 yards, and Homer each had nine carries for 51 and 31 yards, respectively. Kendrick Shanklin opened the scoring with a 56-yard punt return for a touchdown, helping Kentucky win for just the 15th time in 50 all-time meetings with LSU. Booty finished a dismal 12-of-33 for 154 yards as the Tigers (2-4, 0-4 West) endured their fourth straight loss after opening the season with a pair of non-conference wins. Rondell Mealey gained 84 yards on 21 carries, becoming the eighth player in LSU history to reach 2,000 career rushing yards.
