RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Thomas Jones rushed for a career-high 229 yards and three touchdowns as Virginia rebounded from a heartbreaking loss for a 47-26 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over North Carolina State. Jones carried 38 times and scored on runs of one, seven and three yards. His previous career high of 207 yards came against Georgia Tech on October 17, 1998. Dan Ellis completed 13-of-25 passes for 233 yards and three scores for the Cavaliers (4-3, 3-2 ACC), who suffered a 24-17 overtime loss to Duke last weekend. Ellis wasted no time trying to shake off the bad feelings as he connected with Billy McMullen on a 34-yard score. But NC State (4-3, 1-3) steadied itself and was able to grab a 13-10 lead on Jamie Barnette's 49-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Peterson with 50 seconds left in the first half. Barnette was 11-of-28 for 263 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted once and sacked twice. Virginia exploded for 30 points in the third quarter to grab control. Jones started the onslaught with a one-yard TD run and scored from seven yards out shortly thereafter. Ellis hooked up with McMullen on a 41-yard score and found Ahmad Hawkins for the two-point conversion. Hawkins caught a 12-yard score from Ellis that made it 40-19. McMullen hauled in four passes for 109 yards and Hawkins and Casey Crawford combined to catch six for 111. The Cavaliers held NC State's Rahshon Spikes to just 60 yards on 18 carries. The Wolfpack still leads the all-time series, 30-18-1.
