BERKELEY, California (Ticker) -- California came within a minute of beating Washington for the first time in 23 years. Then the inevitable happened. Maurice Shaw had a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown runs, the second with less than a minute to play, as Washington posted a 31-27 victory over its Pac-10 rival. The Huskies (4-3, 3-1 Pac-10) have 17 straight victories against the Bears (3-4, 2-2) dating to a 7-0 loss in 1976. Shaw, who rushed for 58 yards on 12 carries, pulled the Huskies into a 24-24 tie with 12:43 to play when he rumbled into the end zone from nine yards out. Mark-Christian Jensen booted a 22-yard field goal to put the Bears back ahead with 6:50 remaining, but Washington responded with an eight-play, 78-yard march that culminated in Shaw's two-yard run with 50 seconds left. Marques Tuiasosopo of Washington completed 10-of-22 passes for 300 yards and three scored, but threw a pair of interceptions. He connected with Todd Elstrom on an 83-yard scoring strike that got Washington within 24-17 with 9:00 remaining in the third quarter. Kyle Boller was only 9-of-26 for 143 yards with an interception, but gave the Bears a 24-10 cushion when he hit Ronnie Davenport with an 11-yard TD pass early in the third quarter. Joe Igber set a freshman school record by running for 186 yards on 35 carries for California. He had a one-yard TD plunge with 21 seconds left in the first quarter that gave California a 14-10 lead. The Huskies lead the all-time series, 43-32-4, and posted their fourth win in five games overall. California has dropped three of four.
