PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Lee McDonald's 25-yard field goal in overtime capped a stunning comeback as Rutgers posted its first victory of the season, a startling 24-21 triumph over Syracuse.

In what is among Rutgers' biggest victories in recent memory, the Scarlet Knights snapped a 12-game losing streak against Syracuse (6-4, 3-3 Big East) and beat the Orangemen for the first time since 1986.

McDonald lifted Rutgers (1-9, 1-5) to its first overtime victory ever by splitting the uprights after Syracuse's Nate Trout missed a 31-yard field goal attempt in overtime.

Rutgers quarterback Chad Schwenk, filling in for injured starter Mike McMahon, completed 19-of-29 pass attempts for 258 yards. Jacki Crooks added 56 yards on the ground, including the tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Syracuse, which had its major bowl hopes dealt a death knell, converted just 6-of-17 third-down opportunities. The Orangemen committed 14 penalties and surrendered four sacks.
