CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia (Ticker) -- Dan Ellis threw for a school-record six touchdowns and Thomas Jones rushed for 221 yards and a score to power Virginia to a 50-21 rout of overmatched Buffalo. The Cavaliers (6-4) racked up 615 yards against the Bulls (0-10), who are in their first season of Division I-A competition. Ellis, a 6-2 junior, threw scoring passes in each quarter, including two in both the first and third period. Bobby Goodman and Symmion Willis had each thrown five TD passes in a game for Virginia. Virginia scored at least 10 points in every quarter, led 24-14 at halftime and blew open the game with 13 quick points in the third period. Ellis hit Pat Washington for an eight-yard score and Kevin Coffey from 22 yards out. Ellis threw just 19 passes, completing 16 for 363 yards without an interception. He found Coffey, Crawford, Billy McMullen and Billy Baber three times apiece and Jones caught two passes for 110 yards and a score. Coffey and McMullen hauled in two TDs apiece for Virginia, which closes its season next weekend at Maryland with possible bowl berths on the line for both teams. Joth Roth carried 20 times for 114 yards and one touchdown for the Bulls, who need to win at Miami of Ohio next week to avoid a winless season.
