PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) -- Stanford not only won the all-important battle for the axe this afternoon, it also guaranteed itself a run for the roses for the first time since 1972. Casey Moore rushed for two touchdowns, including a 94-yard fourth-quarter score, as the Cardinal trounced rival California, 31-13, to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl in the 102nd meeting between the Pac-10 Conference rivals. Stanford, which could have went to Pasadena by virtue of a loss by Washington, left nothing to chance. Moore rushed for 116 yards on six carries, including a one-yard plunge midway through the second quarter that put the Cardinal (7-3, 7-1 Pac-10) ahead to stay, 14-7. With Stanford holding a 21-13 lead in the final period, Moore put the Bears (4-7, 3-5) away with his long TD jaunt with 11:23 to play. The Cardinal earned its first Rose Bowl berth in 27 years and will wrap up the regular season next weekend against Notre Dame. Todd Husak completed 11-of-26 passes for 216 yards and broke open a one-point game when he found Dave Davis with a 36-yard scoring strike to make it 21-13 with 2:08 remaining in the first half. Troy Walters was Husak's favorite target, amassing 126 yards on six catches. Brian Allen carried 17 times for 62 yards and opened the scoring with a 22-yard run that put Stanford ahead just 1:53 into play. But the upset-minded Bears responded quickly. Deltha O'Neal returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a score to knot the game at 7-7 before Moore's one-yard run put Stanford ahead to stay. California ended its season with three straight losses and have dropped five straight "Big Games" to Stanford. The Cardinal have won nine of the last 11 meetings for the axe and hold a 52-39-11 lead in the all-time series.
