MIAMI (Ticker) -- Ken Dorsey and Clinton Portis were in high school last season when Miami was whipped by Syracuse. But the true freshmen played like they wanted revenge. Dorsey completed 22-of-31 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns without an interception and Portis ran for 98 yards and a touchdown to lead Miami to a 45-13 blowout of the Orangemen. The win clinched second place in the Big East Conference for Miami (7-4, 5-1 Big East), which rebounded from a 66-13 loss at Syracuse last season. The Hurricanes appear headed to the Gator Bowl, which already accepted Georgia Tech, while it looks like Syracuse (6-5, 3-4) is going to the Music City Bowl, where Kentucky might be the opponent. Dorsey, in his second start, joined some lofty company in tying the school freshman record for TD passes in a game, becoming the first true freshman to do it. The others are Gino Toretta, Bernie Kosar and Jim Kelly. In consecutive starts with Kenny Kelly injured, Dorsey is 41-of-57 (71.9 percent) for 430 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. Portis, the youngest player on the team, extended his school single-season freshman rushing record to 777 yards. Classmate Jarrett Payton, the son of late NFL legend Walter Payton, contributed 51 yards on 11 carries. Miami jumped to a 2-0 lead with 8:48 left in the first quarter when Syracuse snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punt attempt. The Orangemen grabbed their only lead 49 seconds into the second quarter when Kyle Johnson scored on a one-yard run, but Miami scored the next 43 points to put away the game. With 6:26 left in the second quarter, Santana Moss returned a punt 61 yards for a touchdown and a 10-7 edge. He also returned a punt 67 yards for a TD against Rutgers, becoming the first Hurricane to do it in consecutive games since Kevin Williams in 1991. Dorsey capped a five-play, 73-yard drive with a 17-yard scoring pass to Reggie Wayne to extend the lead to 17-7 with 2:06 left in the half. Just 66 seconds later, Leonard Myers intercepted Troy Nunes and tiptoed 54 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. Portis ran for a three-yard touchdown with 11:27 remaining in the third quarter. Dorsey hit Moss for a 16-yard score 5:12 later to increase the bulge to 38-7. Credit for Dorsey's last touchdown pass should go to tight end Daniel "Bubba" Franks. From 17 yards, Dorsey threw the ball in Franks's direction. It hit the shoulder pad of the defender and the 6-6, 260-pound Franks spun around, found the fluttering ball over his head and dove into the end zone to catch it. James Mungro's one-yard plunge got Syracuse its final score with 13:07 left in the game and a botched extra point attempt assured that the losing team in this game finished with 13 points for the third straight season. Miami is 11-7 in the all-time series, including a 6-3 mark in the Orange Bowl. Nunes was 13-of-20 for 147 yards and one interception, while Madei Williams was 6-of-9 for 88 yards. Tight end Stephen Brominski had 70 yards on four receptions and Mungro had 41 on 15 carries.
