LUBBOCK, Texas (Ticker) -- Kliff Kingsbury threw two touchdown passes and Texas Tech's defense dominated in a 24-3 victory over New Mexico in the season opener for both teams. The Red Raiders have beaten the Lobos seven straight times and own a 28-5-2 lead in the all-time series. The series began in 1931 and the teams were meeting for the first time since 1995. Kingsbury was not particularly sharp, completing 21-of-47 passes for 186 yards and an interception. He threw a six-yard TD pass to running back Ricky Williams to open the scoring 8:16 into the first quarter and an eight-yarder to Derrek Dorris that made it 14-3 with 11:51 left in the third period. Williams rushed for 78 yards on 15 carries for the Red Raiders, who never trailed and totally shut down the Lobos. Texas Tech collected 255 yards and held New Mexico to 167. Junior college transfer Jeremy Denson was just 6-of-18 for 52 yards and an interception for the Lobos, whose only score came on a 49-yard field goal by Vladimir Borombozin with two seconds left in the first half. The Red Raiders made it 17-3 on a 33-yard field goal by Chris Birkholz with 33 seconds left in the third period. Midway through the fourth quarter, defensive end Aaron Hunt picked up a fumble and raced 63 yards for a score. Holmon Wiggins ran for 91 yards on 24 carries for New Mexico, which has not beaten Texas Tech since 1984.
