EVANSTON, Illinois (Ticker) -- Damien Anderson rushed for two touchdowns to lead a strong ground attack as Northwestern posted a 35-17 victory over Northern Illinois in the season opener for both teams. One of the top running backs in the Big Ten Conference, Anderson opened the scoring with a four-yard TD midway through the first quarter and added a seven-yard run with 57 seconds left in the first half that gave Northwestern a 21-10 lead. The senior carried 20 times for 88 yards. Sophomore Kevin Lawrence added 81 yards on 16 attempts, including a two-yard TD run in the third quarter. The Wildcats finished with 236 yards on the ground. Junior quarterback Zak Kustok also was effective for the Wildcats, going 16-of-27 for 176 yards with two touchdowns. He found Ronnie Foster from 24 yards late in the third quarter to push the lead to 35-10. Thomas Hammock had a two-yard TD run and Dan Urbam scored from one yard for Northern Illinois, which fell to 0-5-1 all-time against Northwestern.
